Obituary for Byron K. Moore Byron Kent Moore, 72 of Grand Island, peacefully passed into his heavenly home on May 13, 2018, surrounded by family at Bryan West Select Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. Byron was born August 1, 1945, to Pauline (Campbell) and Kenneth Moore of Gresham, Nebraska. He completed his early education at Gresham High School in 1963.

He attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln where he was a member and officer of Acacia Fraternity, graduating with his degree in 1967. He taught American Studies and History at Grand Island Senior High and later served as Assistant Principal. He was active in teacher’s organizations and served as Key Club sponsor.

He served in the Army Reserve for 6 years. He married Jan Kaufmann on December 30, 1968, at Albion, Nebraska. They made their home in Grand Island.

He completed both his Master’s and Specialist’s degrees in Administration from (then) Kearney State College. He completed Doctoral Studies through Nova University at Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was recruited by Natrona County School District in Casper, Wyoming in 1982 to serve as principal of Natrona County High School.

He was in charge of 2000 students and 200 staff for 25 plus years. He was named Wyoming Principal of the Year in 1989, going to Washington, D.C. to accept his award. He was also honored for his school’s drug intervention and education program at the White House by Nancy Reagan.

He was active in administrative and district programs including advanced placement classes and academy diplomas for college preparedness with special distinctions. He was responsible for a new stadium, field, track, and sports facilities while at NCHS. He and his wife of 49 plus years made their home in Casper for over 25 years where they enjoyed the mountain environments, especially Breckinridge, Colorado where they owned a timeshare condominium.

They retired and returned to Grand Island in 2007. He was President of the Friday noon Kiwanis Club, Senior Warden of the Vestry at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and treasurer of the local homeowner’s association. He looked forward to his weekly coffee group.

Byron was an avid reader -especially of his historical book collection. He was interested in movies and history documentaries. An avid gardener, he enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers, particularly a large orchid collection.

He won prizes at fairs for the flowers, orchids, and plants that he tended. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining for family and friends and at holidays. Their adopted companion cats brought him much enjoyment.

Traveling in his retirement with Jan was a specially-loved activity. Together they visited much of the U.S. plus the Bahamas, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Jamaica, the British Isles, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Nova Scotia, and most recently, Egypt. They had wonderful memories from these trips.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, parents, his brother Gregg and several aunts and uncles. He leaves to be cherished by his wife, Jan, sister Joan Black (Lynn) of Grand Island, brothers Rev. Rod Moore (Mary) of Knoxville Tennessee, Mike Moore, and Larry Moore (Janice) of Gresham.

Also, brother-in-law Lynn Kaufmann (Janey) of Lincoln, 9 nieces and nephews, and 14 great nieces and nephews. Memorial services and a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday May 19, 2018, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Grand Island, 422 West 2nd Avenue. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

There will be cremation and no visitation. Honorary pallbearers for the church service are Bob Allison, Joan Moore Black, Joe Cook, Michael Moore, Ed Sittler, and Joe Watkins. Burial services will be at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham, Nebraska, at 1:00 P.M. Sunday May 20.
