Carl Purcell “Skip” Rebele, 90, of Oakland, MD, died Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at his home. Born June 18, 1928, in Swissvale, PA, he was the son of the late Carl Koenig and Edna Smith (Purcell) Rebele. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joanne (Henry) Rebele.
Carl graduated from Swissvale High School, attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Penn State College, Class of 1950, where he earned a BS in Forestry. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, ROTC, the Scabbard & Blade Military Honor Society, DMS, a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association, Pittsburgh University Club, and a Penn State University Alumni Volunteer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the far East in Korea with the 578th Combat Engineers Battalion, where he was decorated and received two battle stars.
Carl was a lifetime member of the 101st Air Borne Division Association, Proctor-Kildow Post 71, American Legion, Oakland and Post 110077 Garrett County Memorial Post, V.F.W., Oakland. He was also a member of the Korean War Veterans and the Military Sojourners #330. Carl worked 15 years in the operational and line management with Payson & Trask and J.H. Whitney venture capital firms, which were dedicated to the expansion and profitability of the Hardwood Lumber Industry in the Mid-Atlantic region.
He retired from Bausch & Lomb in 1991, after 20 years of employment, where he began as a Construction Manager of the Bausch & Lomb lens plant, which then led to many other various job responsibilities. As Plant Manager in Oakland, then as the Professional Sales and Marketing Manager in the SOFLENS Division, and was a key member of the management team responsible for the revitalization of the Ray Ban Sunglass Product Line. Carl was recognized as Sales Person of the Year in 1988.
Carl was appointed to the Maryland Governor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee in 1994, one of six citizen members to serve the Western Region of Maryland. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, B.P.O.E. , the Garrett County Recreational Trails Commission, Allegany County Trails Commission and the Great Allegheny Passage Trails, where he served as Vice President.
He served on the SOMD DCL Dunk Committee, World Affairs Institute, Deep Creek Lake Management Board, where he served as Past President, ARC Disaster Assessment Manager, National Ski Patrol, the Wisp Ski Patrol, the Special Olympics of Maryland, Masonic Lodge, 102 A.F. & A.M., the Bellvue Order #286, Consistory, Zem Zem Temple and Deep Creek Lake Property Association, where he served as Past President. He is survived by his wife, Ann Lois (Regan) Weinert-Rebele; two sons, Carl Henry Rebele and wife, Barb, Owings Mills, MD; David Newell Rebele, Hagerstown, MD; one daughter, Suzanne (Rebele) Sincell and husband, Don, Oakland; 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. At Carl’s request he will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap at a later date.
