Kathy Ann (Meyers) Helbig, 66, of Oakland, MD, died Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD where she was awaiting a liver and kidney transplant donor and succumbed to an infection. She had battled a deadly liver disease from 1982 until a liver transplant in 1992. Born July 10, 1951 in Oakland, she was the daughter of Wilma L. Meyers and the late Samuel Meyers.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Kim Meyers. Kathy was co-owner of Helbig Insurance Agency with her husband, Terry. She had previously worked at Gonder Insurance, First United Insurance, Garrett County Memorial Hospital, C and P Telephone, and Bausch and Lomb for over 20 years.

She was a graduate of Southern High School and attended Garrett College where she especially enjoyed Leo Martin’s accounting classes. Kathy was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and volunteered with the Ruth Enlow Library Board of Directors for eleven years, Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library, Garrett County Republican Women’s Club where she was past president, Garrett County Board of Elections, Southern Garrett Band Boosters, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts where she served as a committee member. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Terry Helbig; one son, Scott Finch, OH; one grandson, Zachary Finch, Oakland, one brother, Ken Meyers and wife, Connie, Oakland; six sisters, Jane Middleborough and husband, David, Georgetown, KY; Vicki Thayer and husband, Jerry; Denise Helbig; Nancy Pagenhardt and husband, Monty; Diana Ashby and husband, Joe, all of Oakland; Kris Cathell and husband, Terry, Cresaptown, MD; one sister-in-law, Jackie Meyers, Oakland and numerous nieces, nephews, great-neices and great-nephews.

According to her wishes, Kathy’s body was donated to Anatomy Gift Registry. A memorial service will be held on July 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 6 S. Second Street, Oakland with Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson officiating.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service. Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
