Obituary of Viola Miller Viola E. Miller, age 97, formerly of 213 Princeton Avenue Corning, NY passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Corning Hospital. Viola was born on June 28, 1920 in Corning, NY, the daughter of the late Per J. and Elsa (Wexell) Hansson. She was a graduate of Northside High School, class of 1937, and was a member of the very first National Honor Society.

She married Howard W. Miller on July 25, 1940. He predeceased her on July 18, 1966. She worked as an administrative assistant to the Principal for GST Boces in Coopers Plains, NY, retiring with over 30 years of service.

Viola was a lifetime member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church and a volunteer at Corning Hospital for over 10 years. She will be remembered as a sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching the NY METs and golf on T.V. Over the years, she could always be found at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. She enjoyed spending time on Waneta Lake, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and working on crossword puzzles from the daily newspapers.

She was an avid reader, a great cook and a cut throat card player. She played bridge, poker and belonged to a euchre club for a number of years. She also loved to travel – visiting the British Isles, Hawaii and other locations over the years.

Viola will be remembered most for her positive attitude and her infectious laugh and smile. She is survived by sons: Duane (Julie) Miller of Corning, NY, David (Sharon) Miller of Painted Post, NY and Daryl (Stephanie) Miller of Somersworth, NH; grandchildren: Keith Miller, Kathy (Joseph) Pallazollo, Kevin (Cathy) Miller, Andrew (Lindsay) Miller, Jon (Theresa) Miller, Kyle (Tracy) Miller, Katy (Jason) Miller; great grandchildren: Christian, Adrian, Natalie, Violet, Rosie and Will; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Kelley; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Viola was predeceased by her infant son, Lawrence Miller; son, Dennis Miller; brother, John Hansson; and sister, Vera Hansson.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 149 W. William St., Corning, NY, Pastor Jennifer Long officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hope Cemetery, Corning.

Donations in Viola’s name may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 149 W. William St., Corning, NY 14830. Many thanks to Kim Caulkins and Beth Tunney for their continued friendship, love and many visits to Absolut Care of Three Rivers and Brookdale Assisted Living over the years. The family would also like to thank the staff at both facilities for their care throughout the years.
