Jeff’s Obituary Jeff Tanberg, 42, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019, in Minot. Jeffrey Paul Tanberg was born January 6, 1977, the oldest of four sons to Tom and Rhonda (Thorson) Tanberg, in Crosby, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Minot and Surrey, ND, where he graduated from Surrey High School in 1995.

While in high school he was active in various school activities; baseball and football were his favorite sports and he had a great passion for playing these sports with his friends and brothers. Jeff was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and attended Hope Lutheran Church where he was involved in Sunday School and youth activities. Jeff furthered his education at the University of Mary and Minot State University.

Jeff had a passion for working with young people, and he had worked in several jobs that he loved. He was the Assistant Football Coach for the Berthold/Our Redeemers School and had the privilege of being an Assistant Coach for his three brothers in Surrey. He also worked for Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch and RSI, working in the Children’s Home, which he said was one of the best jobs he ever had because he was able to develop close relationships to children with special needs.

He would take them to sports events, bring them home for holidays, and took every opportunity to teach them and show them how special they were and make them feel loved. Jeff’s joy was in making people happy and making people laugh, and when they were happy, he was happy. Jeff’s son Brendan was born in 1995, and Jeff knew then what unconditional love meant.

Jeff loved to be the fun dad; taking him on motorcycle rides, spending hours on end throwing batting practice, taking every opportunity to share his love of football, collecting sports cards, and spending time with his uncles and grandparents. He was always the one to take up the opportunity to show Brendan a new activity and was never short on ideas. Later in life, Jeff struggled, but never lost the love for Brendan.

As Jeff often said, “I need to get well for Brendan”. Jeff’s joys in life were his son, brothers, parents, close friends, and a niece and nephews, who were “the best part of his day”. As a family, we know that God took Jeff home because He saw how broken and hurt he was.

Losing Chad was by far the greatest pain our family endured, and Jeff was never able to recover from losing one of his best friends. We take comfort in knowing they are together; God’s loving promise of eternal life for those who believe in him is our strength. Jeff is survived by: mother and step-father, Rhonda (Joel) Walter; father, Tom Tanberg; brothers, Brent (Jacky) Tanberg, Jeremy (Emily) Tanberg, all of Minot, son, Brendan Larson, Travis AFB, California, step-brothers, Alex (Mallory) Walter and family, Devils Lake, and Ryan Walter, Grand Forks, ND; step-sister, Allison (Andrew) Bertsch and daughter, Minot.

Also surviving are his special friend, Dyan Melton, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and his favorite little friends, his nephews and niece: Kayden, Gavin, Carson, Nolan, and Aliveah, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jeff was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Allen Thorson and Mary Ann (Thorson) Tanberg, and paternal grandparents, Jerry and Deloris Tanberg, and his brother, Chad Tanberg. Visitation: Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Funeral: Monday, January 14, 2019, at 1:00 pm at Our Redeemer’s Church, Minot. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Our Redeemer’s Church, and Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
