Robert “Bob” Custer Porter, age 78, of Claypool Hill, VA passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 in Richlands, VA. Bob was born on August 22, 1940 in Tazewell County, VA and was the son of the late Robert C. Porter, Sr. and Lillian Birkelbach Porter. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during Vietnam.

Bob retired as a District Circulation Manager from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph after 43 years. He enjoyed hunting, watching football and playing golf. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Richlands, VA and was a lifelong resident of the area.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine French; grandparents, William and Virginia Porter; and William and Mary Birkelbach; special aunt and uncle, Grace and John Porter. He is survived by: His wife of 53 years, Brenda Craig Porter of Claypool Hill, VA Daughter, Beth Parks and husband, George of Bristol, VA; granddaughter, Kimberly Parks of Charlottesville, VA Son, Jeff Porter of Murfreesboro, TN Brother and Best Friend, William Witten Porter and wife, Linda of Dumfries, VA Nephew, Michael Porter and wife, Michelle of Fredericksburg, VA, their children, Hannah and Drew Niece, Amy Miller and husband, Jeff of Dumfries, VA, their children, Nathan and Cole First Cousins, George Birkelbach of Bluefield, WV; Charles Keith Birkelbach of Beckley, WV Mother-in-law, Virginia Craig; sister-in-law, Judy Craig of Steelsburg, VA Brother-in-law, Wayne Craig of Richlands, VA Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Custer Porter will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 29, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Richlands, VA with Rev. Tkach and Joe Blair McGlothlin officiating.

Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA. Pallbearers will be Jim Hammond, Richard Lindsey, Honorable Jim Doak, Gene Hearl, Dairel Bobbitte, Dr. Tony Lotito, Honorable John P. Boggess, George Birkelbach and Joe Blair McGlothlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Keith Birkelbach, Don Dunford, Gene Joyce, Peggy King, Jo Jones, Roger Pike, Jack Hawks, Rex Cole, Danny Cochran, Amoth Hayes, Lonzo Crouse, Larry Davis, Lonnie Davis, Bill Sizemore, Terry Wess, Joe Perry, Jr., Jerry McReynolds, Troy Ross and Doug Laforce.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 on Thursday evening at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA. Members of the Casey-Short VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church; 402 Suffolk Ave; Richlands, VA 24641.
